As the holiday season descends upon New York City, one neighborhood in Brooklyn transforms into a winter wonderland like no other. Dyker Heights, situated in the southwestern part of the borough, has earned a reputation for hosting one of the most spectacular Christmas light displays in the city.

In this blog post, we’ll embark on a virtual tour of Dyker Heights Christmas lights, exploring the origins of this dazzling tradition and reveling in the magic it brings to residents and visitors alike.

Christmas In New York – The Birth of a Tradition

Dyker Heights’ Christmas lights extravaganza began in the 1980s when resident Lucy Spata decided to amplify her holiday decorations. What started as a personal expression of festive spirit soon grew into a neighborhood-wide phenomenon spanning three avenues and several streets. Now over 30 years, it’s a tradition upheld by numerous homeowners who spare no effort in adorning their properties with an awe-inspiring array of Christmas lights, decorations, and holiday-themed displays. Did you know over 100,000 people travel to the neighborhood each year to see the dazzling homes and Christmas light displays?

Must-See Holiday Displays

As if Christmas in New York wasn’t spectacular enough, walking through Dyker Heights during the holiday season feels like stepping into a fairytale. The neighborhood streets come alive with a symphony of twinkling lights, inflatable characters, and meticulously crafted decorations. From towering nutcrackers and life-sized Santas to sparkling reindeer and elaborate nativity scenes, each house competes to outshine the other in a friendly display of festive creativity.

The Spata House:

Lucy Spata, the matriarch of Dyker Heights’ Christmas lights, still plays a significant role in the neighborhood’s display. Her house, adorned with thousands of lights and eye-catching decorations, serves as a focal point for visitors and a testament to the enduring spirit of the tradition.

Crescent Lights:

The area around 84th Street and 12th Avenue, known as Crescent Lights, boasts some of the most extravagant displays. Residents here go all out, with synchronized light shows, animated figures, and a symphony of colors that captivate onlookers.

Polizzotto Home:

The Polizzotto residence on 84th Street is a must-see, often featuring an elaborate nativity scene and a meticulously decorated garden. The attention to detail and the warm glow of the lights make it a standout attraction.

Tips For Visiting

Dress Warmly:

The December weather in New York can be chilly, so bundle up to fully enjoy the spectacle without the distraction of the cold. (We also recommend bringing a hot chocolate or coffee with you!)

Weekday Visits:

Weekdays generally offer a more relaxed experience, with fewer crowds compared to weekends. Consider planning your visit on a weekday evening to enjoy the lights at your own pace.

Respect Residents:

Remember that Dyker Heights is a residential neighborhood, and the residents graciously open their homes to visitors. Be mindful of noise levels and respect private property.

Go Between Christmas and NYE:

The light displays typically go up just after Thanksgiving and stay up until New Years. If you want a less crowded experience, we recommend visiting between Christmas Day and NYE.
